GPS Technology

What is GPS?

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a technology used to manufacture an electronic device named GPS Receiver. By using this device one can find out the exact position of his location when his at the unknown place and like to find out to reach the safer place. By entering the surrounding known landmark in the GPS Receiver, it shows the closest popular spot and exact distance how far from this entered landmark. Worldwide, if anybody goes to any city, if he/she like to know the route for a spot, this GPS Device will show the map be giving direction and the exact distance from the spot entered

The background process of GPS Receiver that finds the exact position of an object location is achieved from sending and receiving the signals from 24 to 32 satellites orbiting our earth exclusively for this Global Positioning System. The longitude, the latitude, altitude and the time resulting to form the Triangulation are computed to find the exact position in the Earth. From this useful data like, the point of interest across the globe, topographic information, road map, and many more for the sake of mankind.

Why we need GPS?

This Technology and its devices are used only by the U.S. Military services before the incident of Korean Air Lines KAL007 was shot down by Soviet interceptors on 1 September 1983. This incident was happened over the East Sea, near Moneron Island just west of Sakhalin Island. The plane was shot down with its 269 passengers, including Lawrence McDonald, a sitting member of the United States Congress were killed.             It was allegedly said that the Korean Airliner was over the sea area which strayed into the prohibited Soviet airspace around the time of a planned missile test.

This incident created a tensest moments and was the root-cause for the cold war between the U.S.A and U.S.S.R at that time. Before this incident, GPS was only used by the military services of U.S.A, the President Ronald Reagan ordered the Military to make use of altered GPS to all the civilians across the globe so that navigational errors like that of KAL 007 could be averted in the future.

How GPS works?

GPS Receivers captures the signals from the 32 satellites that forms the mathematics principles of triangulation to pinpoint your location. By the use of stored database such as the point of interests across the globe, road maps, topographic information and much more. Thus GPS receiver converts the useful data resulting to give the exact location, speed and time information in a useful format.

Wide Area Augmentation System have the signals are accurate within three meters are the advanced GPS Receivers uses. The satellites orbiting our earth has a atomic clock, various radios and simple computer. The satellites continually broadcasts its changing position and time by understanding its own orbit and the clock.

Where the GPS is applied and Who uses it?

  1. Location - determining a basic position
  2. Navigation - getting from one location to another
  3. Tracking - monitoring the movement of people and things
  4. Mapping - creating maps of the world
  5. Timing - bringing precise timing to the worl

In Agriculture

For Accuracy of farming, to monitor the application of Pesticides and Fertilizers. GPS provides the location information map fields, and where to plow.

In Aviation
GPS Technology is used in the Aviation Industry to the Pilots for easy navigation and to find out exact route to the destination. And for the Aircraft control room to monitor the plane route without any deviation.

In Environment

This technology is used to find out the movement of Environmental changes like Oil spills, forest fires and Hurricanes. Also possible to find locations that have been altered by disasters.

In Transportation

GPS helps in-navigation system with automatic vehicle location. It allows the drivers look up the destinations and to keep track of where they are. Some systems giving automatic rout to the destination by displaying turn-by-turn directions. Hospital Ambulance is getting immediate and clear rout to find out the patient location at the time of Emergency.

In Public safety
Nowadays many BPO’s in our country operating the office vehicle to pick up their female employees fitted with the GPS system to ensures their safety and security. Many Schools are also uses this GPS in their school van for the students safety.

In Railways

To prevent collisions of trains in the same track, this GPS is very much used. For the announcement of the forthcoming stations in the long distance trains and keep track of the train by time and accuracy.

In Space

For launching the satellites in its orbit which revolves round our earth for various purposes of the countries uses this GPS and its inventions.

In Sport

Nowadays many long distance Car and Cycle Race to keep track of the route and for the safety of the participants this GPS is widely used.

In Fishing

Fishermen uses the GPS Receiver for long distance sailing to capture the fish from the signals they received where the potential of fishing is possible.

Points to be considered in buying a GPS Receiver

When anyone want to buy a GPS receiver the following points to be considered to get a correct device in the market.

Price : To get a quality receiver one may not consider the price. But an inexpensive unit is the best choice to enter into the GPS world.

Portability : Easily taken to anywhere should be the main factor when buying a GPS unit and some units mount directly in the dashboard of your car, boat or aircraft.

Ease of use :   Many GPS units comes nowadays with easy of operation with in-built help available in itself. Some of this even gives voice instructions when you are in the driving.

Product Level : The choice of selecting the Basic level to advanced level is upto the users decision, anyway the units have all the bells and whistles are available to purchase.

Software : The in-built map software and other are used in the unit to store the location you searched. Some unit have the USB support to connect with the PC. Almost all the units nowadays come with this facility.
